fan speed controls

Hey everyone,
I would like imput on the proper way of controlling fan speeds.
Would a simple dimmer switch work? Or is a seperate plug and play gizmo required for such an application?

get one with a built in speed controller - I bought a separate unit and it was rubbish, it had to be at 60% before it would power the fan, and then it make the fan groan in a laboured kinda way.

I heard of that happening engineer, problem is is that I already have the equipment but need to tone the flow down.
I really dont want to invest in new equipment.

I was in the same position, and just sold the fan and controller I had and and bought a fan with it built in, and the difference is night and day, well worth it imo

the TT ones with speed control also have a temp probe that hangs in the tent an speeds the fan up to full power if it goes over your pre-determined temperature, so it's a win win
