First Time Grow, in Over Our Heads!

This is a journal documenting my first time growing cannabis outdoors, as well as my first time growing hydroponically indoors.

here are some pictures of the outdoor grow(s):

Above: This platform ensures that these plants will get the maximum amount of sunlight that my grow area can provide.

Above: 17 sour bubble clones, i simply don't have adequate funding to individually pot these girls, so i thought of putting them in this old swimming pool from my youth.

For my indoor grow we are using a relatively simple Deep Water Culture system, much inspired by Roseman's Deep Water Culture tutorial (read this fabulous tutorial if you haven't already:

Below: Deep Water Culture system, with an assortment of CFL's, these are all things you can get at Walmart or Home Depot.

I'm a couple weeks behind on starting thread, so i will have to let the pictures speak for themselves until i can catch up

Hey RHF, :welcome:
Looks like you got a good start to me, I like the way you used a cooler for your res.
Hopefully that will keep your res temps down.
Do you know what the res temp is? This is important to know.
You using any nutes?
What strain are you using in the Deep Water Culture system?
Whats that thing sitting on the left side on the res?
What size are the lights?

Sorry for so many questions. Its just that with this information,
The experience growers can foresee problems before they can happen.

Can't help you out on the soil grows. But they look good.

reps to ya for the cooler.

I am in.

Very nice setup you got going!! I also like the cooler idea, the drain plug would make res changes easy. I would definitely like to see the pool idea happen, that would be one huge jungle!!

One note I had, that propagation dome is unnecessary with a Deep Water Culture system. I would be cautious that it doesn't get too hot, especially with the lights situated where they are.:peace:

Hello all!

I'm Powerz and I will be helping RedHeadFarmer with what will be our very first grow, and believe me we are both extremely excited!

Hey H,

Thanks for the warm welcome! The cooler idea was based on us initially doing the Deep Water Culture system outside and wanting to keep the res temperature low. We have already lost our first try due to pythium (root rot) within the first few days. We got pythium again with these seedlings and we flushed them out with peroxide like Roseman suggests in his 8 step remedy. I hope the cooler idea is not backfiring on us! I have yet to get an underwater thermometer for the res but we'll get one asap. The strains we are using indoors are 1 Chocolope, 2 OG18 X Skunk, 1 Sleesestack X Skunk, 1 L.A. Confidential X Skunk. We got these seeds from attitude seed bank and the only one that is feminized is the Chocolope. The object hanging left of the system is the airpump, blowing air to two 14" airstones. We are going to use AN Grow and Micro as well as bloom in flower. The lights we have now are all 2700K 42w CFLs I will be ordering 8 6500K 85w CFLs to accompany them asap.

Thank you guys again for stopping by, as soon as I get my photo gallery in order I will post some more recent photos I took today.

Hey Answer thanks for stopping by!

The propagation dome was put on the system when we initially were going to put it outside, once we rigged the cfls indoors we took down the dome.

I am really excited to see the pool turn out. All the clones were troubled destined for the trash so hopefully we can save them! I'll have photos up asap!

So please allow me to walk you all through our garden!

Let me first show you our Healthy Plants!

The 7 girls in the 7 gal grey pots were the first clones we got on 6/19/10. 6 Jack The Rippers and 1 Big Bud. We Fimmed each of the JTR and we Topped the Big Bud which came out great imo!

All right, lets move on to our Hospital! First we have these four on our sick table.

2010-07-07_13_46_47.jpg

This first one on the left is the only one that survived the pythium we got in the Deep Water Culture indoor system. She isn't doing so hot.

2010-07-07_13_47_02.jpg

2010-07-07_13_47_16.jpg

This next one is the first Sour Bubble we got and she stunted after we topped her, then she got what we think is sun bleaching.

2010-07-07_13_48_08.jpg

2010-07-07_13_48_45.jpg

These last two were a side to side comparison (organic compost vs. nute supplemented) neither are doing very well, but it was also a bad batch of clones (same as the pythium suffered Deep Water Culture)

Next we have this Pool. RHF had the opportunity to save the lives of 17 dieing sour bubble babies and he took it! We didn't have room on the support we made for our other girls so we put them in a children's swimming pool. The pool is a mixture of FF Ocean Forest, Perlite and some pro soil mix we had laying around the house. Please feel free to comment on these poor girls, and help us save them!

Finally let me update you all on our indoor grow! Here is the view from outside, we were allotted a laundry room and we turned it into a very cheap DIY grow room!

We have one set up with 4 Sprouts and a popped seedling we just put in. We have the equipment for our second set-up but we are going to wait until we have our heads screwed back on and our other plants are healthy first.

Hey Power nice ta meet ya and welcome.
Thanks for the answers So let me go through this with ya.

"I have yet to get an underwater thermometer for the res but we'll get one asap."

Yeap, get one asap. Knowing the water temp I feel is a must.
this could of been your problem in the begging.

Your also going to want something to Test PH. I see you got something
there in the pic. with your nutes. Learn it. AN nutes are top of the line.
I have never used them but have read where they do hold the PH in check
pretty good.

"The strains we are using indoors are 1 Chocolope, 2 OG18 X Skunk, 1 Sleesestack X Skunk, 1 L.A. Confidential X Skunk."

Very cool. My question on these is the type. eg. I couldn't find the others but
Chocolope Sativa 95 / Indica 5
Origins - Chocolate Thai x Cannalope
Flowering - 63-70 days

I am also learning from my first grow that I want to keep the same type of plants in my res. for now being a newbie. I have 2 Bubblegummers and 2 Ice. Right now the Ice is almost twice as tall as the the BG. Plus The BG took in the nutes much more better than the ICE cause I nute burnt them 3 times and it didn't even effect the BG. Since the Ice got much bigger I had to raise my light. I am running a single 400 watt HPS. Now in your situation, You might not have that problem because you should be able to move your lights around and very close to the plant.

Speaking of lights. You want to use the 6500 K for the veggie. Or at least on a plus side of that for the light over the 2700 K. When heading into the flowering, your will want more 2700 K lights. I see a lot do a mix spectrum.

Did you feed those bubble sproutlings? They look like they are either nute burnt or overwatered maybe? If you did feed them it is too early, not until the second set of full leaves comes in, do you introduce nutes at 1/4 strength.

Your gonna need a bigger yard in 2 months!

I like all the DIY stuff, the pool is an amazing idea!

Hey SG! Thank you, I hope they survive in it! Sorry I kinda abandoned this thread, after reading the "How to make a grow journal" sticky I decided to make a new one with a more detailed title and first post so its easier to follow.

Hey Answer! Ya we were feeding them prematurely for a couple days, they also got root rot and the lights burned them a bit as well. We now have clean water running through them and the lights and pythium have been corrected and I think were heading in the right direction now :)

Your gonna need a bigger yard in 2 months!

Hey SnowBender! Thanks for dropping by! I was actually just thinking about building a green house in the backyard!
