A company called Grow Healthy could soon be the first medical marijuana facility in Polk County. At least that's what Don Clifford is aiming for.

"Grow Healthy is a company that has built a large medical marijuana facility, potentially, in Lake Wales," Clifford said. "We have applied to the state and we put our first application in, and now we're gonna wait for the Department of Health to go through the process and we'll see who gets the licenses."

Clifford says his company is hoping to produce medical cannabis oils. They're used for treating epilepsy and cancer. The move is a part of the newly legal but highly regulated Compassionate Medical Cannabis Act that Gov. Rick Scott signed into law.

Grow Healthy is competing with facilities in other counties in Florida for the license to produce the oil.

But the topic of marijuana still has some people on the fence. Theodore Smith lives just down the street from Grow Healthy, and his views aren't shared by everyone.

"At first, I was a little skeptical that it might bring in bad people it might bring people from the other side trying to get in there," he said. "But the guys came down, talked to (us) and it's supposed to be real secure. It's just the oil. They're not producing any kind of plant that gets anybody high or anything."

Clifford says Grow Healthy should know if it's approved in the next two months.

Grow Healthy submitted its applications to The Office of Compassionate Use. It's a division of the Florida Department of Health. If approved, Grow Healthy will have a license to be a dispensing organization. Clifford said they would begin producing cannabis oil by the end of the year.
