The deadline for backyard marijuana growers to harvest their crops expired this morning, but the Fresno County Sheriff's Office will not attempt to find out if all of the plants have been removed.

Sheriff's spokesman Chris Curtice said deputies believe almost all of the crops have been harvested and that recent freezing temperatures likely destroyed any remaining plants. Deputies will continue ongoing investigations, Curtice said.

Citing violence associated with marijuana gardens, the county Board of Supervisors on Sept. 14 approved an ordinance that banned outdoor gardens in unincorporated areas.

In October, Fresno attorney Brenda Linder sued the county of behalf of people who have medical-marijuana cards from doctors and who grow it for themselves. The ban was later moved to Nov. 30.
