The following article at Oxford Journals says it all. I learned something new.

Green Light Drives Leaf Photosynthesis More Efficiently than Red Light in Strong White Light: Revisiting the Enigmatic Question of Why Leaves are Green

Maybe yet another reason why HPS grow such big nugs, that and they do produce a good amount of red.

I wonder if this means using a green light would effect anything while plants are sleeping. Probably not, as this study is about green light when it is within strong white light. A soft green light shouldn't cause any stress while plants are sleeping.

The article is a bit heady, but a very interesting read. The science is all there. Hard to argue with science. LED doesn't really have this strong white light to have the penetrating green light within it, but still LED does a good job. It might be why LED can't produce huge buds, though, like HPS can.

Re: Green Light Drives Leaf Photosynthesis More Efficiently than Red Light in Strong

I posted this article about 2 years ago. There are a few things to remember about this. First, it is only a recording done in deep cell tissue only. Over 95% of the plants photosynthesis occurs in the upper leaf stage. Secondly, the leaves where lit from the under side of the leaf to be able to get the penetration into that region. Thirdly, this only occurs when there was excess white light applied from the top. The excess in this study refers to more light then a plant can possibly use. This is also called the light saturation point. So the over saturate the plant in usable light in a very controlled environment, where they cooled the leaves (due to such high light being placed very close to the surface) and then applied 2 different single wavelength light sources directly on the under side of the leaf at higher then normal flux (amount) rates.

Moral of the story is, this is just a test. In no way will we ever grow like this or have that much light over a single leaf. The following is a much better real world study

Thx, for another interesting article. Green light plays some role. LEDs have lots of green anyway, so that's good.
