The District of 100 Mile House is hosting an Industrial Hemp Green Building Conference on Nov. 4-6 that will feature industrial hemp experts, including Cascadia Green Building Council director Emmanuel Lavoie.

Industrial Hemp Pilot Project manager Erik Eising says the theme, From Our Fields to Your Home, will explore and demonstrate the various practical and sustainable aspects as well as potential uses for industrial hemp.

He adds the conference is intended for a wide range of people, including people considering hemp production, contractors and builders interested in sustainable building methods, students, engineers and building inspectors.

The conference is being held at the Red Coach Inn and will begin with an invitation-only industrial hemp producers business meeting Nov. 4.

A free public information session will follow from 3 to 5 p.m., and is aimed at local ranchers interested in industrial hemp production. Then there will be a meet-and-greet at 5 p.m.

On Nov. 5, the free conference begins at 8:30 a.m. The keynote speaker is Lavoie, and presenters include University of Manitoba associate professor of biosystems engineering Kris Dick and his student Jeremy Pinkos; Calgary-based Canamo Earth Building Technologies managing partner Shayne Korithoski; ZT Timberframes’ Damon Zirnhelt; Manitoba-based commercial hemp straw decortication business owner Wally Empson; Bowen Island hemp house builder Jayeson Hendyrsan.

After the speeches, a panel discussion involving all presenters will take place and will examine ways to overcome hurdles to industrial hemp building.

The Nov. 6 industrial hemp building construction workshops will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. with a $100 registration fee, which includes lunch, with the venue yet to be confirmed.

Workshop topics will cover green building aspects such as hempcrete material, hemp straw bale construction; hemp plaster; and colouring the plaster with pigments.

Sessions will be headed up by Henderson, Dick and Pinkos.

Registration is required by e-mail to 100mhhempbuilding@gmail.com.
