Hong Kong customs officers seized drugs with a street value of 770,000 US dollars and arrested two men after smashing a syndicate suspected of producing cannabis destined for discos and entertainment venues, police said Thursday.

The arrests came on Wednesday as the Customs Drugs Investigation Bureau vowed to keep up its crackdown on drugs in the run-up to the Lunar New Year next month.

The drugs seized included 383 cannabis plants capable of producing around 10 kilograms of cannabis buds, 10 kilograms of herbal cannabis and three kilograms of another drug.

The haul was recovered from the home of one of the arrested men and from a village hut where officers also discovered solar lamps and planting tools.

The two men, aged 34 and 37, are expected to appear in court Friday charged with cultivating cannabis plants and trafficking in dangerous drugs.
