How deep to dig outdoor holes?

Hello all, Well this is the week I am putting my plants into the garden and I am prepping my holes in the ground. I have about 7 inches of good soil on top then blow sand past that so I am digging larger holes to plant my plants in and mixing up a soil mix to fill the holes. My plants are in 5 gallon buckets right now so I was wondering how deep should I dig the holes? I read that cannabis doesn't go deeper than 16 inches but spreads it's roots wide compared to deep, Is there any truth to this? My holes right now are about 22 inches in diameter and about 22 inches deep. Will this work? Thanks all.

Usually 2x the size of the roots ball/mass

I’m doing same thing, I want to make holes ~20” diameter and ~20” deep, filled with best organic soil I can get.
The surrounding soil is ok, fertile, somewhat rocky but the plant can send it’s roots wherever it wants.
