How To Get Legal Medical Marijuana In Massachusetts

Before a patient can buy medical marijuana at a dispensary, a number of conditions must be met.

Under state law, patients with certain chronic diseases or a debilitating medical condition must get a certification from a qualified doctor before filing with the state Department of Public Health for a medical cannabis card. The card, which costs $50 annually, is required to purchase marijuana at a dispensary or to legally grow the plant.

That certification is where it gets tricky. Only select doctors are qualified, said Brad Feuer, the CEO of Integr8.

Patients are often referred to a specialist like Integr8, he said. Its office in Burlington frequently sees patients from nearby Lahey Hospital and Medical Center.

During an initial appointment with a doctor at Integr8, the patient's records are reviewed before the certificate is granted. The first visit lasts 45 to 60 minutes, Feuer said.

Health insurance usually covers the consultation as an out-of-network specialist visit, Feuer said, adding, "We're currently a cash practice."

The patient gets a bill that can be submitted to the insurance company for reimbursement.

Integr8 will work with the patient to discover the optimum dosage and delivery mechanism for the drug, Feuer said, adding, "We really stand behind working with patients one-on-one."
