Voters in the California will have an opportunity to decide whether to legalize the use of recreational marijuana. It comes after Secretary of State Alex Padilla said Tuesday the proponents of legalization turned in more than enough signatures to place the question on the November ballot.

If approved, it would mean one in every six Americans lives in a state with legal marijuana sales, including the entire West Coast.

Bryan Willkomm, general manager of the medical cannabis dispensary, Humboldt Patient Resource Center in Arcata, said he would still be focusing on the medical side of marijuana for his business whether it is legalized or not. He did support any initiative that would de-criminalize marijuana use.

"Any law that is stopping the arrest and prosecution of individuals, we are very excited for," he said.

He did believe while some of his patients may leave to use marijuana recreationally if legalization is approved, there would be more patients willing try marijuana as a possible treatment.

"I imagine that you'll see an uptick in medical patients because the fear of prosecution is now removed," Willkomm said.

Supervisor Estelle Fennell said the county had been at the forefront of establishing any type of regulation on marijuana. She said while other counties in the state have passed ordinances banning marijuana, Humboldt is moving forward in embracing the possibilities. If legalization occurs, the county is prepared.

"We've already got our structure in place and that's what we're going to be following," she said. "There will be differences in terms of how it's distributed. Who can sell it or who can buy it?"
