Hyena's Never-Ending Adventures In Growing

Love your journal man. Keep it up!

I appreciate you being along for the ride my friend. Crazy ride. But so fun!

Highya HM,
Very nice harvest. Is harvesting becoming routine, yet? You've done 3 or 4 so far?

Oh, I was brainstorming a little, and thought about using some device with a signal to let you know if power goes out up there, or if the pump malfunctions, something like that. Moving parts will become faulty, and an alarm is needed to let you know when it needs attention. And so, another cycle ......... Cheers

Thanks Bode, and thanks for being here. My real backup is the timers are all equipped qith internal battery backup which would last for weeks without power. So no matter when power goes out, when it comes back on everything is still on schedule. Power interruptions are rare and also usually brief. If it's out for a week, well, when did that happen last? Not too likely. And I don't use cameras because it doesn't help me to see myself getting ripped off if I'm three hours away. I'm not calling the cops, even though what I'm doing is legal that could change and I am not going to let them know where I am. I doubt I would try to find or prosecute some random thief even if I had his image. Are the police going to put their best men on that one? Right. If I got ripped off I would have to bag the whole location, and just start somewhere else. Security is the best defense, the only defense really, and I have a setup that as far as I can discern tells no tales...

So far so good.

Peace, Hyena

This is my first post on 420mag. I read your journal from page one to the present. The secret grow lab was an inspiration. I was on the edge of my seat thinking your wife was going to bust yo ass sneaking up there. Skunks in the attic...LMAO.
Never heard of a Dutch/Bato bucket until I stumbled upon your journal. I copied your setup and think you would be proud. 6 bucket/18 gal res
I’m in a not so friendly state which I hope changes this November. Collecting signatures for recreational use. Hope it passes. Medical was legalized last year but I ain’t givin up my AR for a card. Might need it to defend my TP stash.

Hey Caddie, golf is my life so I'm glad you stopped by...and reading my entire journal, well, you must be crazy but I'm glad you enjoyed it! I do this journal to satisfy my need to talk about my grows since I can't tell anyone local. My aim is also to inspire others and share what I have learned and it sounds like that happened, which really gives me tremendous satisfaction. I read the trials and efforts of others here myself five years ago and it started me on my own path. That path has led, obviously, to a larger growing endeavor than most, but in a closet or a warehouse, it's all the same thing and it's challenging but truly fun. I hope your efforts have produced results and we would love to see you post more and even share some photos. Most regulars here on 420 Mag are just pot porn junkies and we always welcome new shots of people's grows. You can also enter quality shots in the contests each month. I have been honored with some wins so I don't enter them anymore, since I believe as many as possible should have the chance. You should check them out and all the entries, it's cool and enlightening to see lots of people's results and super cool plants.

About golf, are you really a PGA caddie? I'm a 2 handicap age 60 and I have won a Dayton Senior championship three times. I like to say I've spent a lot of my life golfing, and the rest I just wasted. :laughtwo: After you have made I think 5 or 10 posts you can send and receive private messages, when you get there PM me and let me know, I'm interested!

Thanks again for your very kind words and I hope you will stick around. I like to post an update every week and there's always something to report. I have probably 6 weeks until the next run comes down, but my next two harvests will be spectacular I promise! Good growing to you!

Peace, Hyena

P.S.: As a collector of American-made AR-15s (quite a collection), I too will defend my TP rolls to the death...or at least until something craps out...

A journey ends and a new adventure begins, fooking A mr.Hyena that Delhi strain sounds rather interesting....

Hi Smeeg, if you look Delhi Friend strain up, it does sound like a champion. I'm also growing Incredible Bulk, and they claim it can produce 1,000 G/M indoors...if it even does half that I'm all in. We'll see!

Stay tuned my one-ring-coveting friend!

BTW, I think my wedding band is the actual One Ring! Every time I slip it on my finger I apparently become instantly invisible to all women! :hmmmm:

Peace, Hyena

Only ever worn one ring, was a present for being best man at my younger brothers wedding, then lost it one week later on my return to the uk.... closest I've come to " wedding ring " was a catalogue once...

Hey @Hyena Merica, how’s that trimbag working out? I’m about to get something, and that’s on my short list. So is a trimpro, and a toms tumbler.

Bro, the TBag is a great tool! The bud has to be pretty dry but it shapes the nugs non-destructively compared to almost anything else and for my needs it's perfect. Takes like an hour to do 3-4 pounds.

I like it.

Peace, Hyena

Highya HM,

Wow, that'll be a time and work saver!! Good for you! Now you can get another tent in grow mode! Can't have a moment's rest, lol! Cheers

So here's another

HYENA'S GROW HOUSE update!

Well, I haven't died from the Coronavirus panic yet...I know I won't die from the virus, but I might from the panic...

At any rate, I got my final numbers in and it was 2.8 pounds of dank budz and another 2 pounds of very nice sugar bud/sugar trim for concentrates. I'm pretty happy with that combined with the value of all I learned. My future grows will go 2 weeks less and produce more. Nice.

The replacements for the now-deceased girls are looking very good I must say...

Super-strong and beautiful Indicas.

I expect big, no, huge things from these babies when the time comes! They came with such glowing recommendations I felt like buying 500 seeds but believe me, the 25 I got cost plenty. So far...worth every penny!

They look good so I turned to the clone forest in Tent #1.

I flipped this grow almost 2 weeks ago and sure enough, a nice stretch so far but nothing too crazy, I plan to keep these MUCH lower than the last grow and maybe the one before that. Why you ask?

Among other things, what I learned from this latest grow is:

-A bigger canopy isn't better. There's a point of density where the interior becomes almost non-productive.

-A high canopy reduces total illumination. The resulting buds are smaller and less dense, partly because of the density of the canopy and partially because they received less useful light. My lights are adequate to produce strong growth even almost 5 feet above the plants. At this distance the footprint of each light is much larger, plus there is significant angular penetration. This means better density (and quality) of buds. When the canopy gets too high the footprint of the lights gets much smaller; buds receive less light overall and there's a waste of biological and electrical energy.

The canopy is surprisingly lush...

Every plant showing the same signs...of course they are. They're all basically the same exact plant with 12 root systems.

We will see if my next effort is better. One way to make it so is to clean out a lot of the smaller sucker branches below the scrog line. Avoiding mold and bud rot, plus general air circulation and better canopy temperature.

Well, that was a bitch.

Crawling under the scrog on the floor isn't easy for a 60-year-old stoner and it took over an hour of such writhing to reasonably clear out and clean up the nether regions.

The worm's eye view

In the end it was much more like other grows I have observed where the growth under the scrog line is minimized so all the plant's energy can go into growing super huge frosty phat buds! I hated that but I think it will possibly pay big dividends...

So...Run #4 is history. Another paycheck from the ol' grow house, which has already paid for itself. I feel as fat and happy as a frog on a lily pad...

Ribbit. Onward to the next harvest! Stay virus-free!

Peace, Hyena

Highya HM,

Not so bad numbers on the harvest. Pays the bills!! 2.8lbs/12 equals almost a quarter pound/plant. There's certainly room to improve there. New little girls look very green and indica!

I don't envy crawling around under the canopy, but that's the price of a great harvest. You did great though. I was just thinking about one of those creepers to get underneath cars to work on them with. Would that help?

Tent #1 is looking so good! I'll bet you're glad you ran the clones now, instead of waiting another 2 weeks. If I were in your shoes, I might keep some mothers you could get clones from. But, that's your business.

Will indicas give more bud weight? Seems like it should. You may be in for a big smile after those buds are weighed. Hope I didn't jinx your grow. I think you're way past that!! Cheers

I caddied from 91 - 96 so I suppose my screen name should say "Former PGA Caddie" Worked a couple events in Springboro on the Nike Tour. When I get enough posts under my belt I will pm you if you want to talk golf, weed or whatever.. I'm fairly reclusive so it might take me a while....I think there might be a fiddle on my back.

I only grow for myself, i'm selfish like that. No sell, no tell has worked out pretty good for me over the last 30 years. Last summers gorilla grow netted me way more smoke than I need. Nothing growing currently, but am contemplating a little reversal run on some DDA and CD-1 this spring. If and when that starts up I will let you know.

No worries, i'm sticking around. Been following your journal for quite some time. Hell, it took me a couple months to read the whole thing. I'm in for the long haul bro....Keep up the good work!

Thanks!

I had a short list, and the trimbag was on it. I didn't get one though, but ended up with a Tom's Tumbler instead. After a ton of digging and reading, it suits my needs/use a little better I think overall.

I assume you caddied at Heatherwoode. :ganjamon: I live within 5 miles of there. I came out and watched several of those tournaments. I remember a guy named Doug Dunakey in 1998 three-putted from 25 feet on 18 to shoot a 59. I also liked watching the Monday qualifier at Pipestone (where I played 27 today) both years 69 played off for a couple spots.

Thanks for the props and info PM me when you can we'll get together.

Peace, Hyena

Yes sir, Miami Valley Open...Heatherwoode....I probably saw you in the gallery but didn't notice cause when your 20 years old "Big Breasted Beauties" were the only thing on my radar...Unless my stash was getting low then I scanned the gallery for stoners. Don't recall Dave Dunakey... I worked for Dave Miley and Taylor Smith the two years I was there.

Yeah I don't know if Dunakey ever did anything on the PGA tour but he is one of the few that had a putt for 57. Not a lot of pros ever did that's for sure.

Actually, I know a little bit of what it's like to have putts like that... A few years ago I was playing Dales at Community if you live near me you'll know it, it's a shorter course but still fun and some good holes...I had a 20 foot putt for eagle on the last green, a short par 4, and had been playing with absolute confidence, everything spot on the whole round and I'm over the putt and my buddy blurts out, "Do you know this putt is for 27 on this nine?" I truly didn't know it, I never shot nine under for nine or even ever had the notion it could possibly happen so I went instantly to shit and made the weakest putt in the history of the game, hitting the 20 footer about 12 feet. I was lucky to three putt...nerves in golf. The stories I could tell.

Peace, Hyena

Dunakey's friends have to be sick of hearing that story after he's had a few. The ending is a big let down, kinda like the titanic. Still...59...damn

Never, and I mean NEVER point out to a golfer when he or she is playing well, but you already knew that. I choked once but my wife was there to give me the Heimlick so it all worked out.

Happy Monday...!

Here's a little HYENA'S GROW HOUSE update!

A quick weekly run up to the GH and all seems well...the clones are all looking perfect!

Tent# 1 is just now 2 weeks into 12/12 and here come the pistils.

Since everyone is literally the same plant, well, two plants, I expect lots of similarity and no surprises. None so far!

The density of this one is already as good as I can do:

Big difference is this canopy is three feet lower than the previous one and the footprint of the lights is WAY bigger. Plus I'm getting lots of sidelighting and overlapping so lower canopy is the rule from now on. I expect this to rise a bit more but another 5-6 inches should give me a super productive canopy with much more effective lighting and those dense nugs I am used to.

So in Tent #2...

Indicas are SO different from even 50/50 hybrids...so stout and thick. The main leaves have stems as thick as some branches in the other room. I am in unfamiliar territory with these two fully-commercial strains but in my opinion this will be a lot of fun to learn.

I couldn't be happier with their strong builds and great color...

They never missed a beat in these big rockwool cubes, which are my new way of life I can assure you. Getting this down better and better as the years, and grows, go by. That's the goal, right?

My whole State is on lockdown with this Corona virus. We literally have been told to stay home on pain of arrest...okay, so what to do? Besides smoke endless weed?

I'm also an amateur comedian and songwriter so here's my take on the Corona thing. I promise you'll laugh! If you like it, share it okay?

Highya HM,

I never thought that growing indicas would be that much of a change. But they sure are looking good! very nice canopy!! The more you grow, the more you know. Cheers
