Hypothetical Energy Requirements Calculations

Hi all!

I am looking to confirm (or correct!) some ballpark calculations for a hypothetical vertical farm. The farm is general purpose to grow a variety of vegetables and greens.

Building size:

  • storeys = 10
  • floor = 55m x 55m
  • interstitial = 1/3
  • floorspace = storeys x floor x interstitial = 20270m2
The interstitial space allows for spacing between plants as well as infrastructure (e.g., ducts).

Grow lamps:

  • coverage = 1.2192m2
  • racks = 2
  • lamps1 = floorspace / coverage x racks = 33252
Using 5W light movers increases coverage by 35 per cent, therefore:

  • lamps2 = lamps1 - (0.35 x lamps1) = 21614
  • movers = lamps1 - lamps2 = 11638
Electrical requirements:

  • power = 250W
  • light1 = 303W/lm
  • light2 = 625W/lm
  • total1 = lamps2 x power = 5.41MW
  • total2 = lamps2 x power x (light1 / light2) = 2.63MW
  • total3 = total2 + movers x 5W = 2.70MW
My primary concern is whether total1 is correct. The calculation for total2 is based on the possibility of creating a grow lamp with a theoretical efficiency of 625W/lm.

What assumptions made for total1 are incorrect, if any, and how can they be corrected?

Thank you so much!
