Morton Grove, IL - Morton Grove could soon vote on an ordinance that would allow its police officers to issue fines for possession of small amounts of marijuana rather than making arrests.

The village board is expected to vote on the ordinance changes at its Nov. 28 meeting, according to the Morton Grove Champion. If approved, the new policy would put the village more in line with the new state law that calls for citations to be issued in some cases of possession of drug paraphernalia as well.

Fines for having up to ten grams of marijuana would be somewhere between $100 and $200 with the new changes. Possession of 10-30 grams would be between $200 and $750 and possession of 30-100 would mean a fine of between $500 and $750.

Police Chief Michael Simo says the changes were suggested by the Morton Grove Police Department.
