Springfield's first medical marijuana dispensary will open for business Feb. 18 – not Feb. 15, as originally announced.

Insufficient time to train staff members prompted HCI Alternatives to delay the opening date, said Jay Cook, the Effingham-based company's director of education and community outreach.

The dispensary, at 628 E. Adams St. in downtown Springfield, will be open from noon to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday, Cook said.

Medical marijuana will be sold only to people presenting cards that identify them as patients in Illinois' medical marijuana pilot program.

Patients must designate HCI ahead of time as their medical cannabis supplier, Cook said. That designation can be registered through the Illinois Department of Public Health, he said.

HCI expects its Springfield location to serve 100 to 120 patients in its first few months of operation, he said.
The company's dispensary in Collinsville opened Jan. 25.
