Industrial Hemp To Receive Hearing in California Assembly

Take Action Now!

Friends:

NORML is pleased to announce that Assembly Bill 1147, an act to legalize the licensed cultivation of industrial hemp, will receive a committee hearing and vote this coming Tuesday. Now is the time to contact your state Assembly member and urge him or her to allow licensed farmers to cultivate this important agricultural commodity.

The United States is the only developed nation that fails to cultivate industrial hemp as an economic crop, according to a 2005 Congressional Resource Service (CRS) report. Hemp is a distinct variety of the plant species cannabis sativa that contains only minute (less than 1%) amounts of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the primary psychoactive ingredient in marijuana. Farmers worldwide grow hemp commercially for fiber, seed, and oil for use in a variety of industrial and consumer products, including food and clothing.

The aim of AB 1147 is to allow California to authorize a licensed, statewide hemp industry. However, this bill will only receive serious consideration if California's elected officials hear an unmistakable message of support from their constituents. Please take two minutes of your time to write your Senator and tell him or her how important it is that they support industrial hemp.

This bill is scheduled to be voted on by the Assembly Public Health Committee next Tuesday, January 10. If your Representative serves on the Public Health Committee, we strongly encourage you to call him or and register your support for industrial hemp. The following Assembly members serve on the Public Health Committee:

Mark Leno (D-CA 13th), Chair - (916) 319-2013
Jay La Suer (R-CA 77th), Ranking Member - (916) 319-2077
Rebecca Cohn (D-CA 24th) - (916) 319-2024
Mervyn M. Dymally (D-CA 52nd) - (916) 319-2052
Jackie Goldberg (D-CA 45th) - (916) 319-2045
Todd Spitzer (R-CA 71st) - (916) 319-2071

Please consider making a financial contribution to NORML's state lobbying efforts.

Thank you for your support on this important issue.
