An Italian appeals court in Rome took action Thursday to enforce drug laws that prohibit civilians from growing marijuana plants for any purpose. An October lower-court case brought drug possession laws into question when a man was found not guilty after officials discovered five marijuana filled pots in his tub, the Italian news agency ANSA reported.

The defendant was let off the hook after he reportedly claimed the plants were intended for sale as home decorations for clients of his.

However, the Cassation Court - Italy's highest court on non-constitutional issues - cited a new law which permits the possession of "soft" drugs in small quantities, but did not extend the law to include growing them.

Court officials ruled Thursday it is not legal to house "even a single plant," the report said.
