Patients suffering from an array of conditions have historically organized to demand early availability of and access to medicines that provide them relief. In that spirit, ASA is working with patients nationwide to organize condition-based Unions to promote medical cannabis research and advocate for safe access to medical cannabis through the Medical Marijuana Unions project.
The Unions work with Americans for Safe Access to distribute important research information to medical professionals, work with condition-based organizations to support patients' right to cannabis in lieu of failed alternatives, and advocate for safe and legal access to cannabis for all patients who need it. The Patients' Unions are open to patients who use medical marijuana, patient caregivers, family members, researchers, physicians, and other health providers who support the use of medical cannabis.
The primary objective of this project is to renew relationships with key condition-based organizations like the MS Society, AARP and other condition-based communities that have traditionally kept an arms length from this issue. Specifically, we would like condition-based organizations to endorse our organizational goals, and engage with ASA to lobby Congress and administrative agencies to end federal raids, expand therapeutic research, and create access programs for patients across the United States. The fact that ASA shares intersecting patient populations with a variety of condition-based organizations provides us with unique opportunities for collaboration.
The Medical Cannabis Unions project includes three areas of focus:
Giving patients a voice, and providing them with the tools to educate their physicians, promote the therapeutic use of cannabis within their condition-based organization, lobby their elected officials and inform the public is the heart and soul of this project. We believe that organizing works best when it is being done by those affected by the law. Providing infrastructure for patients to become advocates ensures their voices will be heard.
