GRANDE PRAIRIE, Alta. - What was he smoking?

An Alberta man charged with possessing marijuana failed to appear in court, but figured out a way to make amends.

Jason Dean Walter was charged with simple possession of marijuana for personal use. He sent court a letter saying he couldn't make it, but was happy to send a money order for what he though was a fair fine - $400.

In a bizarre twist, Judge J.C. Koshman accepted Walter's offer, setting the fine at $400.

As the money order had already been cashed, Walters was grinning as he walked away from court a free man Monday. "Only in Grande Prairie," according to defence lawyer Angela Howey.
