Smoking tolerance level: 4.5

Legislation: marijauana and hashish used to be legal in nepal till the late 70s - that is why it was heaven for hippies in the 60s and 70s. Nowadays Cultivating, selling, dealing and possessing is illegal but usually nobody cares.

another reporter added: "It's illegal, but they are not too bothered about own use, just smuggling, which is serious"

Law enforcement: The police have no interest in marijuana related issues and if you are a tourist no one cares about you smoking.
In case you are caught you can buy your freedom in the spot usually at a very meagre price.

Many people smoke marijauana and hash in nepal: it is common for holy man or sadhus (as they are locally called) who live in temples to smoke marijuana, nepalese people even have lord shiva who smokes weed and there is a festival celebrating his birthday when most people smoke that day. Many old people in villages smoke it too you can virtually say more than 60 percent of the youth smoke weed it is one of the most weed friendly country in the world......

another reporter added: "The cops are not seen around much, and they are usually easy to buy off. It\'s not wise to smoke indiscreetly though. Keep it out of sight. A quiet drag in your lodge, or whilst rowing on Phewa Tal is the way to go."

Where to buy marijuana in Katmandu: If you are tourist in kathmandu just go to thamel before you walk for 10 mins. you will be offered hash more than 5 times. If u are not offered- just look around for a guy who looks like a smoker and just start a conversation - you won't be disappoinated.

If you are a shy type just go to some bars inside get some drinks and try talking with the waiter.
The bars i recommend where lots of smokers hang is the bamboos club, les yeux, tongues n tales, new orleans etc.

If you have local friends you can usually get the best outdoor grown marijuana which is often found outside the kathmandu valley .

Finger n temple balls are the most common types of hash in nepal and quality is very good and marijuana is outdoor grown and the quality depends upon where it is grown....marijuana and hash are available in every part of nepal if you have a tourist guide with you he will be able to get you some weed anywhere you travel pokhara is one of the city where u get best quality marijuana.

....just make some local friends people are very friendly and talking about marijuana is not a big offence and is taken very lightly....

another reporter added: "Keep an eye out for Bang/Bhang lassiis. Yoghurt based drinks stuffed full of weed. But be careful, there may be sufficient quantities to knock you out."

and also: "Anywhere, but Thamel and Durbar Square are the usual places where touts offer it to tourists. Any rickshaw jockey can sort you out, and just about any young guy can point you the right way."

Katmandu marijuana prices: Marijuana is unbelievely cheap in nepal - you can get a kilo of marijuana for 7000 nepali rupees(=$100), and usual hash price is 700 nepali rupees(=$10) for 1 tola (11 grams). However, if you are tourist you could be asked for more money so try to bargain....if you are lookin for some free drags from chilum just go to some hindu temples notably around pashupatinath temples and some dread locked holy man will ask u to join him for a drag....

another reporter added: "Absurdly cheap. A tola can be had for less than Rs 1000 ($15). "

Brands: Royal nepalese finger and temple balls are most common brands of hash in nepal lots of hash is grown in nepal and exported to many countries it is common to read in the local newspapers that 200 or 300 kilos of hash were busted almost every two months.
Marijuana is outdoor grown and potency varies on how it is grown.

another reporter added: "Some of the fresh Manang weed can be good, but the old stuff should be avoided. The hand-rubbed charas is phenomenal. "

More information:

Don't eat the hash. If you do, you get horribly stoned for ages and it can be hard to even walk home, and it may not be the most hygienic

Why do you think that these seed varieties are never at auction or to be found sold as a pure sativa anywhere?

Why do you think that these seed varieties are never at auction or to be found sold as a pure sativa anywhere?

I would have to speculate that alot of ppl really can't acquire them, as the usual westerner would need an interepter, most cannabis farms have "uneducated" farmer that are really just villagers and don't trust anyone! Not even a nepali. These farmers are paranoid a well. So getting to these farms is a rough trek in its own, and could be hours of trekking through dense forest filled with maoist. I have had no problem obtaining seed from the farmers that mind our land in southern Nepal, as my mother in law owns the land. However they are definatly not going to just give it to the usual suspect. The seeds are distributed by farmers for farmers and these farms are seemingly "remote". So in a nutshell, the seeds aren't just sitting around in someones dresser. Some of these seeds are from generations old plots. And some are handed down from generations. IMO these seeds aren't even feminized. But i have succesfully obtained jars of them , my wife and mother nlw uses them for cooking, and my mother tries to give them to me when I am departing. But i get waaay to paranoid to smuggle them outa nepal as I am curious looking. Long dreads , white caucasion.

But whether it be HEMP seed or seeds for cultivation, a tourist can't just bring a crap load of em on board a plane, since the TRIBHUVAN INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT has cannabis sniffing soldiers and wont hesitate to cut open even the most expensive handicrafts, clothing, souvenir, instruments, this happened to me. So dare I try to bring seeds thru customs? Even if they are just hemp seeds, the same law applies. Sure there are people who are paid to smuggle anything outa Nepal, antique statues from Temples, gold, jewelry, etc, but seems the police have a nose for cannabis here. There are tourist sitting in Nepali jails that have tried their luck at smuggling. they even show some of these on the local news in KTM sometimes. WHat I may do at one point , collect a variety of seeds from different sources in Nepal. North, sout, east., west, and see what comes of this, there are plots that are centuries old waiting to be re-discovered. My wife is newari, and has alot of relatives that farm, so we'll see in the future.

I would just like to update on some of the information. les yeux should now be closed due to lack of business. As for rolling paper, up to now I know that they do sell papers (pure hemp, transparent, rizla, king size, & smoking) at some shops for about $1. For those of you that want to use a chilum they go for about $2 if you know how to bargain.

Another great place to smoke and fill you munchie needs would be OR2K. It is a low lit Jewish restaurant with plenty of good food (humus, babaganesh, and my favorite banana pancake with ice cream and chocolate sauce) If you talk with the people around you, you will meet and learn about many interesting people and things. For example: there will be those traveling to see the world, scientist (the best people to talk to in my opinion), and those that are just trying to figure out what to do in their life. I can tell you one thing, you will always be entertained.

There are many more places you should check out if you are going to be in Thamel. If you feel like eating a sandwich, there is a great place just under what used to be les yeux. For pizza's go to Road House Cafe, and for deserts go to Italian Pizza at the starting point of Thamel. For some of the best fries, you want to go to a little place in front of Buddha bar which can be found by taking a little rickshaw ride (they will race if you ask them). For when you get thirsty, tea is always good and if you get water ask for "mineral water" and make sure the bottle has not been opened yet.

Some stores do sell hemp clothing, they might be a little pricey but the quality and style are worth it.

Now for an ending note: If you buy hash from Thamel you can almost always bargain with them, also please check the hash when being offered because sometimes (mostly the younger one) tend to put plastic to make it seems like more, and I would not want anyone to get sick.

:thanks:

WHY eat western food when in Nepal, youcan get sandwiches anywhere in the world. But the BEST place in Thamel , is the BAKERY CAFE. MOMO, and sizzler. Screw Nepali pizza they dont even use mozzarela they use YAK CHEEES! YUK!
BAKERY CAFE IS AT THE BEGINNING OF THAMEL>

THAMEL:

BAKERY CAFE

NEVER EAT THE HASH IN NEPAL. I almost died, was in bed for a week throwing up and dysentary. My wife had to get a doctor. Was basically poisoned.

Since you are going to be in their country, by all means please try the local food. I do like a good momo every now and then. Although I have only eaten at Bakery cafe for breakfast, it is a pretty chill place (great cakes and cakes as well). The cheese maybe yak but I never noticed it to the point of not liking it. When you have traveled and lived in the amount of countries I have, you tend to enjoy most foods.

Also like some others have said before do not eat the hash. If you do decided to for some reason after reading people saying not to, please have someone there with you.
