Two New Zealanders arrested in India after allegedly being caught with cannabis have declined help from New Zealand diplomats in the country.

The pair, a man and a woman, were arrested in Bhuntar, an area well-known for marijuana cultivation.

Authorities allege the New Zealanders were carrying 96 grams of cannabis.

India has strict drug laws, with penalties of up to 10 years jail for people caught with even a few grams of marijuana.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Wellington said New Zealand's High Commission in New Delhi had been informed of the situation and had made contact with local authorities.

Diplomats had made contact with the man and the woman, but they had declined offers of help.

They declined ?? WTF?? :roorrip:

What is interesting is that India has a long tradition of cannabis use for spiritual awakening and for medicine. I would like to see an international campaign shaming the Indian government for kowtowing to the American and British position on cannabis. Clearly they haven't they been able to shake off the Western yoke yet. We should bring that to their attention. Such a campaign would involve writing letters to the editors of Indian newspapers where such arrests are reported, and generally blogging about the issue in the terms stated above (i.e India is still a slave to the West).

The New Zealand couple arrested in India after allegedly being caught with cannabis have been freed on bail ... :peace:
