Lake Elsinore city officials on Tuesday will consider a proposal to temporary ban marijuana operations that grow the drug for medical purposes.

The request is to adopt an interim urgency ordinance that would set a 45-day moratorium of all legal marijuana manufacturing activities within the city, in order to give officials time to examine what regulations should be set for its production.

Lake Elsinore municipal code prohibits medical marijuana dispensaries but allows the use, possession and cultivation of legal medical marijuana regulations.

Proposal for the moratorium stems from several phone calls and a recent business license application received by the city's Community Development Department about establishing marijuana manufacturing operations in Lake Elsinore, city reports said.

According to the reports, the city's Community Development Department did not receive inquiries for dispensaries but rather for a "wide variety of activities including: growing, drying, farming, packaging, processing, warehousing, manufacturing, and wholesale distributing of medical marijuana."

Approval of the ordinance requires at least a 4-1 council vote, and if approved, the ordinance would go into effect immediately. After the 45-days, council may chose to extend the ordinance for an additional 10 months or one year after holding a public hearing.

Tuesday's meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Cultural Center, 183 N. Main Street.
