LANSING -- The city said today it will refund application fees to all the medical marijuana dispensaries that applied for licenses.
That announcement came in a news release from City Clerk Chris Swope. The city did not grant any licenses to the 48 dispensaries that applied for them.
"This is the right thing to do. Our licensure process was halted midstream and we will not be doing the work anticipated to be covered by the fee," Swope said in a statement.
Swope said two recent Michigan Court of Appeals decisions, which essentially said medical marijuana dispensaries are illegal, led to the decision to refund the $1,000 application fees.
Danny Trevino, owner of HydroWorld, expects to get $4,700 back. He says he could use the cash after the three dispensiaries he owns in Lansing and Jackson were raided by police late last month on suspicion that the business was selling to people who did not have registered patient cards. No one was arrested in the raids.
"I could use the money," Trevino said today. "At first they said the fee was non-refundable. Nothing should be non-refundable in life. I'm glad they're giving it back."
