This past Monday was the first day of the Bill Filing in the 2017 legislative session and Texas Lawmakers have written several bills that could pave the way to legalization of marijuana in the Lone Star State. This past election opened marijuana to some residents in Arkansas, New Mexico and several other states across the nation. With more than half of the 50 states with decriminalization laws, medicinal laws or recreational laws regarding marijuana it's only a matter of time before Texas begins to change their ways.

Last year, CBD's were made legal through the Compassionate Use Act that allowed for oils from marijuana to be used medicinally with patients who suffer from epilepsy and other medical conditions.

THIS WEEK, lawmakers in Texas have proposed several different bills to be discussed including House Bill 58 which would create a special court for first time offenses similar to the current ordinance in Harris County. Also, according to local news reports, "House Bill 81, which aims to replace criminal penalties for possession of up to an ounce of marijuana with a civil fine of up to $250.

Another bill proposed is House Bill 82, which aims to classify a conviction for possession of one ounce or less of marijuana as a Class C misdemeanor instead of Class B.

Senate Joint Resolution 18, also authored by Rodríguez, would allow voters to decide whether to legalize marijuana for medical use if recommended by a health care provider. "It is long past time we allow the people to decide," Rodríguez said in a statement.

Rodríguez also filed Senate Bill 170, which would change possession of one ounce or less of marijuana from a criminal offense to a civil one."

It seems like a state as large as Texas could see a huge financial gain by opening up marijuana for farmers and local businesses. Colorado has seen record profits and Texas could see even larger gains. With so many states getting on the marijuana bandwagon it has to be a matter of time before Texas also steps off the ledge.

It really seems, at this point, most Texans would support the legalization in an election. It's just a matter of time.
