is there much difference in use of electric between a hps and cfl if they are the same wattage,,, might be a stupid question but i no the cfl are basically a giant energy saving bulb (like the ones we get in the uk) but at high wattages do they actually save energy compared to a hps. the reason i ask is i would much prefer to use a hps but dont want to run up a huge bill but if it turns out it would costs about the same as using a cfl then i might aswell go for the hps.

a watt = a watt hps or mh or a incandescent
As far as energy savings i run a 1500watt ceramic heater to warm my foyer in the winter and run a 600 hps and 2 150s=900watts. so i use less energy in my flower box then in my foyer
cfl are energy savers compared to incandescent but no where as bright IMHO

so a 250watt hps is equal to a 250watt cfl = they have the same electrical usage now where the difference come in is lumen output which has nothing to do with energy usage

yup that is correct. my 42watt cfl is equivalent to a 100watt incand
