Departments in the unincorporated areas of Los Angeles County were directed by Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich to enact a temporary ban on the processing of medical marijuana while impacts of the ban can be studied, officials said.

The cultivation, manufacturing and laboratory testing of medical marijuana have been put on hold for 45 days while the study is completed, according to the enactment.

However, "there are no legal dispensaries in the unincorporated areas of Los Angeles County," said Tony Bell, communications deputy for Antonovich, as the dispensing of medical marijuana from storefront locations through the county's zoning code has already been banned.

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors continued an item proposed by Antonovich which would have placed a similar ban on mobile sales and delivery of medical marijuana which has been associated with criminal activity.

"We have a fundamental obligation to protect the quality of life in our unincorporated neighborhoods and communities," Antonovich said. "For the county to make an informed determination whether to allow, regulate, or ban (medical marijuana) activities, a study to determine the impacts of these activities on the county's unincorporated communities should be conducted."
