Freetown - The company planning a 1 million-square-foot medical marijuana growing operation in Freetown is adding a research and development facility.

Colorado-based AmeriCann received approval Dec. 6 from the Freetown Planning Board to add 30,000 square feet of research space, according to a statement from the company. The board previously approved cultivation and processing plans for the Massachusetts Medical Cannabis Center last December, the company said.

The R&D facility will be part of the first phase of development, which also includes 130,000 square feet of cultivation and processing.

"Our goal is to make MMCC a center of excellence in the northeast U.S. for the development of a wide variety of exciting new advanced products for medical cannabis patients," said Tim Keogh, CEO of AmeriCann.

AmeriCann will focus R&D efforts on emerging technology, infused products, lighting systems, plant science, and more.

MMCC is expected to be one of the largest and most technologically advanced cannabis cultivation facilities in the nation, the company said. In October, AmeriCann completed the acquisition of the 53-acre Massachusetts property from Boston Beer Company for $4,475,000 cash.
