Wareham - The Wareham Board of Selectmen wants the town to reap the benefits of marijuana sales sooner rather than later.

The board took no action on a request from Selectman Alan Slavin to forward a letter to Governor Charlie Baker and local legislators urging a delay in provisions of the commercial marijuana sales section of the Question 4 referendum approved Nov. 8 by state voters permitting legalization, regulation and taxation of marijuana sales. Slavin said his request was based not on attempting to overturn referendum results, but instead to allow additional time to consider all ramifications of the vote and determine best how local municipalities can effectively implement the new law.

Slavin's sentiments, however, were not shared by colleagues Peter Teitelbaum, Patrick Tropeano and Anthony Scarsciotti, none of whom expressed support for Slavin's letter. Teitelbaum and Tropeano said they were especially anxious for the town to receive its share of marijuana sales through taxation as soon as possible.

As for Slavin's concerns over unintended consequences of the legislation, Tropeano responded: "Whatever needs to be amended, I'm sure the (Massachusetts) Legislature will amend."

Chairwoman Judith Whiteside was absent from Tuesday's meeting, because of illness.
