A Methuen man and a Lawrence woman were arrested Tuesday night after the car they were in was stopped by State Police and a large quantity of marijuana, refined THC and cash was found.

Tommy Marte, 23, and 24-year-old Mery Rodriguez were taken into custody in Lawrence Tuesday night shortly after 8:30 p.m. Trooper Joseph Dillegro reported he saw a Ford Explorer driving on Amesbury Street with no lights.

Dillegro said after he stopped the car he noticed a strong odor of marijuana coming from the interior. The trooper said he saw a small bag of marijuana on the front floor of the car, then a larger bag of marijuana was seen.

A subsequent search of the car found the observed bags of marijuana, a black duffel bag with 29 large plastic bags of marijuana, plastic bags containing 90 tubes of THC rolls, five additional large bags of marijuana, four cell phones and $65,598 in cash on Marte's person and stashed inside the car.

Dillegro said the suspects made no attempt to hide the contraband.

Marte and Rodriguez were charged with possession with the intent to distribute a Class D substance (marijuana), possession with the intent to distribute a Class C substance (THC), and conspiracy to violate drug laws.

Marte was also charged with operating without headlights and driving while in possession of an open container of marijuana.
