Blantyre, Malawi - A Malawian police officer in the central lake-shore district of Salima has been arrested by fellow officers alongside five accomplices suspected of breaking into a district magistrate's court and stealing marijuana exhibit. Fellow officers nabbed 32-year-old Harold Thayo and a gang who allegedly pillaged 43 bags of Indian Hemp (marijuana) weighing 90 kilogrammes.

The drug was confiscated at police check-points and stored in the court building as evidence in various drug trafficking cases, according to Salima Police spokesman Gift Chitowe.

'Yes, we've arrested Constable Harold Thayo and his accomplices in connection with a break-in at the Salima Magistrate's Court Exhibit Room and the missing of the 43 marijuana bags,' Chitowe told PANA on Thursday.

The Salima police publicist said Thayo connived with the court's administrative officer Hopeson Chifulemba, 47, a guard and three others.

'They sold the drugs to other people before they were arrested,' he said.

Chitowe said Thayo and Chifulemba had since been transferred to the capital, Lilongwe, while the rest were still in the lake district.

Indian Hemp or marijuana, locally known as chamba, is a banned substance in Malawi although it is widely used by the youth. It is widely grown in the central district of Nkhota Kota, a district that shares borders with Salima.

Nkhota Kota marijuana, or cannabis sativa, is believed to be the most potent and fetches premium price in the back streets of South African and as far as London.

Traffickers pay bribes to police to haul it from the Central Region to the commercial capital, Blantyre, where more organised cartels smuggle it to South Africa and United Kingdom.
