ALMOST $1 million worth of cannabis plants have been seized from a house in Sydney's southwest, police say.

Police executed a search warrant on a house in Wianamatta Drive at Cartwright about 12.10pm (AEST) yesterday. They seized more than 260 hydroponically grown cannabis plants with an estimated street value of $940,000 and an elaborate hydroponics set-up.

A 21-year-old Cartwright man has been charged with cultivating a larger than commercial quantity of a prohibited plant and bypassing the electricity meter. He has been refused bail and will appear in Parramatta Bail Court later today.

Police said it was too early to rule it out, but there was no suspicion the operation had any connection to the sophisticated hydroponic cannabis operations recently uncovered in seven extensively modified homes in nearby suburbs. About 2000 high quality plants worth more than $11 million were seized from "hydro houses" in Blair Athol, Bradbury and Auburn last week.
