Man Grew Cannabis 'To Help Him With Medical Condition'

A CANNABIS user claimed he grew his own plants in his loft to ease the pain of a medical condition.

Former miner Steven Hudson, 55, said he needed to use cannabis because he suffered from vibration white finger, a painful condition caused by working with vibrating tools.

He was spending between £60 and £200 on an ounce of cannabis, before he tried his hand at a home-grown crop, Nottingham Crown Court heard.

He raised £500 from the sale of some gold and invested in a system in his loft to nurture 18 plants.

The man he bought the system from also offered to bypass his electricity at his former council home in Raymede Drive, Bestwood Estate.

But police raided the home and seized the plants when they were just a week old.

Hudson, was arrested and charged with producing cannabis and abstracting electricity.

He pleaded guilty to both charges.

Judge Michael Stokes QC sentenced him to a year in prison.

He said Hudson had been fined in February 2010 at Nottingham Magistrates' Court for producing cannabis and was dealt with "very leniently".

At that time, he had 13 plants in his loft underneath lighting controlled by an "elaborate" trap door, said the judge.

Hudson said he had smoked some of that cannabis, used it in cakes and coffee and had "mostly" consumed the drug himself.

The judge told him: "Despite that previous conviction and knowing full well it was in defiance of the law, you set up another grow.

"You have admitted to growing the plants found by police which, on this occasion, was your second grow.

"It's quite plain this was a sophisticated set-up. You have candidly admitted it cost you £500 for the equipment and automatic watering and lighting supply and for the electricity system that was bypassed."

Of the latest crop in the loft, Hudson told the court it was not going to be sold.

Defence solicitor Digby Johnson said, in mitigation, said that the projected yield from the latest crop would have been 31 ounces, if the plants had come to fruition.

He said that Hudson had vibration white finger due to equipment used in the pits.

He had found new work, but left due to problems with his fingers.
