A Barrow drug dealer used a large chunk of his Job Seekers Allowance to buy cannabis for distribution.
Mark Alan Wells said he was only selling to friends and was therefore not technically a supplier.
Furness Magistrates’ Court heard on Tuesday how the 30-year-old, from Marsh Street, was spotted by police. Mrs Lisa O’Loughlin, prosecuting, said: “It was about 2.20pm on November 9 when two plain clothed officers saw two men waiting on the corner of Crellin Street, Barrow. They knew them to be users. The defendant was then seen walking towards them and handing over small packages.”
When officers searched Wells, he was found to have £667 cash on him and a mobile phone.
Barrow drug squad carried out a further search of his home and recovered weighing scales and cannabis cut up into chunks.
Mrs O’Loughlin told the court how Wells admitted selling the class C drug, but not for financial gain. He had picked up his friend’s cannabis when he bought his own.
She told the court that he spent £60 a week and used his Job Seekers Allowance on cannabis, and earned money by doing odd jobs for his landlord.
District Judge Gerald Chalk refused to accept that his motive for dealing wasn’t for commercial gain. He said: “Your offending is so serious that it is beyond my sentencing powers.”
Wells was released on unconditional bail until January 12 for sentencing at Barrow Crown Court.
