Police from the Narcotics Branch destroyed two marijuana camps that were found this week, while roadblock interceptions also yielded finds.
According to a statement from the police, on Tuesday, police conducted an eradication operation at Kamuni Creek, Demerara River. During that operation, they destroyed a camp. They burnt three fields of about two acres, with 2,300 plants up to six feet tall. They also burnt 13 nurseries with about 14,500 seedlings that weighed 240 kg. No one was arrested.
On Wednesday, at about 5:45 am, police intercepted a bus at a roadblock on the Fort Wellington Public Road. The minibus was destined for Georgetown. A search uncovered 11 parcels of marijuana weighing 22.5 pounds, allegedly found on a male passenger. As a result, the man, Charles De Jonge, of Bachelor's Adventure, was arraigned before Magistrate Krishendat Persaud at the Fort Wellington Magistrate's Court for possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking. De Jonge was remanded until March 29.
Also on Wednesday, another man was found in similar circumstances on the Auchlyne Public Road, Corentyne. At about 10:30 am, the bus was intercepted and an 18-year-old man of Canefield, Canje was found with nine pounds of marijuana strapped to his body. Charges are expected to be instituted shortly.
Meanwhile, yesterday a drug eradication exercise was conducted at Lancaster Village Backlands, Corentyne. During the operation, a field of about half an acre with roughly 4,000 plants was destroyed. Dried cannabis and seeds were also found and burnt at the camp. The haul amounted to 221 kgs of marijuana. Two bicycles and a spray can were lodged in police custody but no one was arrested.
