WASECA – If you happened to see Waseca County Deputy Andy Buckmeier driving through town with a bunch of pot plants hanging out the back of the unmarked sheriff's office pickup truck he was driving, your eyes weren't playing tricks on you. He was doing his job.

The Waseca County Sheriff's Office confiscated more than 16 marijuana plants from a corn field in northwest Waseca County Thursday.

Chief Deputy Brad Milbrath said they are on the lookout for marijuana being grown in cornfields around the county. This time of year the plants are near maturity so the sheriff's office tours the county by air looking for sites like the one raided Thursday.

"This one stood out," he said.

Milbrath said in this case, the farmer who owned the land did not know marijuana was growing on his property. It's not uncommon for marijuana growers to hide their growing operation on other people's land.

Farmers are asked to keep an eye out for anything suspicious going on in their fields. This includes corn stocks disappearing and trails going into the field that weren't made by the farmer.

Milbrath said this particular marijuana operation looks to be mostly for personal use, with some left over to sell.

The sheriff's office will dry the marijuana out and weigh it for evidence, before having it destroyed.
