Indian customs officials Tuesday seized marijuana worth 25 million rupees from a group of six people masquerading as soldiers in Assam.

A customs official said the seizures were made on the highway near Khetri, about 40 km east of here.

"On specific information we intercepted the two trucks, both bearing army registration numbers and six people inside the vehicles wearing army uniforms," Customs Superintendent P. Kakoty told IANS. "The two trucks looked like army vehicles going in a convoy."

On being searched, officials recovered neatly packed marijuana consignments.

"A total of 9,733 kg of high quality marijuana was seized and the six people were put under arrest," Kakoty said.

"Interrogations are on and we are almost sure the arrested persons were not genuine soldiers and simply wearing uniforms to give police and other officials in various check posts a slip."

The drug consignment originated in Manipur and was destined for West Bengal or Bihar.

Tuesday's haul was the biggest single seizure of marijuana or other narcotic drugs in the region.

Customs officials in the past year had seized drugs worth Rs.80 million in the region. The northeast borders the heroin producing 'Golden Triangle' of Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar.
