I see that the manufacturer of Marlboro cigarettes, Altria Group, Inc., just spent $1,800,000,000 ($2,400,000,000CA) to buy 45% of the Canadian cannabis business Cronos Group yesterday. And it looks like it'll be spending another $1,050,770,000 ($1,400,000,000CA), ending up with a controlling interest (55%).
That's roughly comparable to the amount Constellation Brands (the maker of Corona and other fine... swill) spent earlier this year on Canopy Growth Corp., another Canadian cannabis business.
Tobacco- and alcohol-related interests seem to be buying up Canadian cannabis producers (et cetera). I assume they'll do the same if/when cannabis becomes legalized on the federal level in the United States.
And Scotts Miracle-Gro - through its shell Hawthorne Gardening Co. - has bought General Hydroponics, Vermicorp Organics, Gavita Horticultural Lighting, American Agritech (aka Botanicare), Can-Filters, Sunlight Supply, Inc., and is now in partnership with The Flowr Corp., another Canadian cannabis producer.
This is the face of legalized cannabis, folks. Aren't you glad you fought for years for the right to not have to sneak down to the hippie on the corner to buy your cannabis, lol?
