LITTLE ROCK -- Arkansas Attorney General Dustin McDaniel changed wording on a proposed inititiated act to, "The Arkansas Medical Marijuana Act," thus preparing the soil for medical marijuana to take root and be placed on the November 2012 ballot. McDaniel said the previous name, "An Act to Allow Qualifying Patients in Arkansas to Acquire and Use Medical Marijuana" was too long and ambiguous.
Supporters need 62,507 signatures from registered voters to put the measure on the ballot.
The act, if passed, would make it legal to use and grow medical marijuana in Arkansas.
U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder said recently that the federal government would not go after people with small amounts of marijuana in states that allow the use of medical marijuana, although the feds and their agencies, including local law enforcement, do have the authority to enforce federal drug laws even when a state allows medical marijuana.
Former Eureka Springs resident and internationally acclaimed artist James Yale, who suffers from multiple sclerosis, has testified that his tremors and pain are reduced with marijuana, allowing him to paint and continue to make a living.
Fifteen states and the District of Columbia have passed medical marijuana laws, allowing sick and dying humans access to the herb.
