The owner of a medical marijuana dispensary charged with violating state election law by offering free pot to residents who registered to vote has been acquitted by a six-member jury.

The Lansing State Journal reported Wednesday that Shekina Pena, owner of Your Healthy Choice Clinic, was found not guilty of influencing voters with money or other valuable consideration, a misdemeanor charge.

In July, Pena offered medical marijuana patients a free half-gram of medical marijuana or medible if they registered to vote at her store.

The promotion was announced via her store's website.

She also included a list of candidates for Lansing City Council she encouraged voters to support.

Attorney General Bill Schuette filed the charges against Pena. Prosecutors argued that she offered the products for free to influence voters to support certain candidates.

Matt Newberg, Pena's attorney, said his client was innocent, and the jury reached the right verdict.
