Columbia Care CEO Nick Vita said being in the medical marijuana business is personal.

"It's very hard to watch somebody you care about not have alternatives available to them. This is just another alternative," said Vita.

He's seen the business grow into the nation's largest producer and provider of medical marijuana.

"We operate in Illinois, Massachusetts, Washington, D.C., Arizona and New York, just to name a few," said Vita.

Now the company's second of four shops in New York has opened in Plattsburgh.

"We're so grateful to be part of the Plattsburgh community and to be a part of the program. We really think this is going to be a great opportunity for patients," said Vita.

New York passed the Compassionate Care Act which includes a strict set of rules. Patients wanting medical marijuana treatment must be diagnosed with one of the following illnesses: cancer, HIV/AIDS, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injury with spasticity, epilepsy, inflammatory bowel disease, neuropathy or Huntington's disease.

Anyone seeking treatment has to have certification from the New York Department of Health and a referral from a physician.

The CEO said the medications sold at the facility will be tinctures, concentrate for vaporization or orally ingestible capsules. All are manufactured at the company's Rochester facility. Vita said none of the treatments are even close to recreational.

"In the world that New York has created for our industry, you hope that you never actually qualify for the program because these are very serious illnesses," said Vita.

Officials said the facility is more secure than your average pharmacy. Anyone looking to seek treatment has to get buzzed into the lobby and again into the locked sales room, all while being monitored by several cameras.

"Anybody who has not already been registered and approved by the state of New York cannot access the facility," said Vita.

Plattsburgh's police chief, Desmond Racicot ,said the facility's security is top-notch.

"Walking through the door, no doubt about it, this place is five-star," said Racicot.

Vita's happy to work in an industry that he said provides a natural treatment to those who qualify.

"I feel like the luckiest guy in the world," he said.

He hopes the company is able to provide care and comfort to North Country patients for years to come.

Officials said the business is open to patients on Tuesdays by appointment only. Those hours are subject to change once the company has a better idea of how many people the Plattsburgh location will be serving.
