Medical Marijuana Growers Can Now Apply In New York

The State Department of Health is now accepting applications from businesses interested in manufacturing and dispensing medical marijuana in New York State.

This comes after Governor Andrew Cuomo legalized marijuana for seriously ill or injured patients in July.

First: You will be required to provide detailed plans of the building. You would also need to pay a $10 thousand dollar non-refundable application fee. That's on top of a $200 thousand dollar registration fee. The registration fee will be refunded to businesses that are not issued a license.

The state plans to award five contracts to private marijuana growers. Each will be permitted to open up to four dispensaries to distribute the drug to certified patients across the state. In a recent interview, County Legislators told News 4 there's a need for medical marijuana and it will benefit the area economically. But local towns and villages need to get on board.

Niagara Falls legislator Dennis Virtuoso says it is crucial that the county and the Town of Lewiston, which has sent letters to Albany decision makers, show their support.

"There is only going to be 5 facilities, and they are not going to put them in an area that does not want them. So these letters of support and these resolutions are very important in the choosing of the location," Virtuoso said.

H2Gro is one of the largest greenhouse operations in Western New York, and Co-owner Gary Smith says the competition for a state license is intense.

"There's a lot of companies coming from out-of-state who have cannabis facilities teaming up with some investors in-state. We expect it to be a very competitive process," said Smith.

The new law will only allow the drug in non-smokeable forms, including pills, oils and vapors. The state expects to register the companies selected by July.
