Hawaii - One of the businesses licensed to operate a medical marijuana dispensary doesn't think he'll be up and running until next year.

Richard Ha provided the estimate Monday as Gov. David Ige signed an updated medical marijuana bill into law.

HB 2707 is designed to keep medical marijuana dispensaries operating efficiently and responsibly, and ensure access for qualifying patients.

When the law was initially passed, officials had hoped dispensaries would be open by this summer.

But, Ha said, "it will take us until January or so to be in production. It may be a little bit more, little bit less, but somewhere around there because the plants gotta grow and do different things, so realistically it will take that long."

The Department of Health granted eight licenses. Each licensee can operate two production centers and two retail locations.
