A last-minute effort to overhaul Montana’s medical marijuana law has been introduced in the Senate.

The measure introduced Wednesday is vastly different than Montana’s current law.

House Bill 423 tries to limit the amount of medical marijuana available throughout the state and who has access to the drug.

It would put much tighter regulations on how patients can receive the drug, on who can grow it and how it is sold.

Senate Majority Leader Jeff Essmann described the new proposal as having three phases. The first phase is a repeal of the current law. The second is to cleanse the state of the old industry. The third phase would then be tight regulation of the new system.

The bill is to be heard Friday in the Senate Judiciary Committee.
