Massachusetts: Tomorrow, Thursday, at 1:30 p.m. at the Grand Staircase at the State House, a group of medical marijuana patients and advocates will hold a press conference to ask state lawmakers to support a medical marijuana law in Massachusetts.

The state legislature’s Joint Committee on Pubic Health is currently considering bill that would make Massachusetts the 15th state in the nation to give seriously ill patients safe and legal access to medical marijuana.

History

In November 2008, 65% of Massachusetts voters decided to make adults’ possession of up to an ounce of marijuana punishable only by a $100 fine.

While this law has helped patients who find relief from medical marijuana, it has not provided total protection. Under current law, patients who need medical marijuana face a terrible choice: They can risk muggings and other dangers if they buy their medicine on the streets, or a felony conviction if the cultivate their own safe supply.

Patients shouldn’t have to go to the criminal market to get the medicine their doctors recommend, and they shouldn’t have to face the stigma of being lawbreakers.

That’s why we are working to enact House bill 2160 — a sensible and compassionate measure that would take business away from drug dealers and protect Massachusetts’ most vulnerable citizens.

WHAT: Press conference to ask state lawmakers to support proposed medical marijuana bill

WHEN: Thursday, March 11, at 1:30 p.m.
