Calimesa is the next Inland city to tackle the hot topic of medical marijuana dispensaries.
City staff is asking the Calimesa City Council for direction on how to proceed with this matter when it meets at 6 p.m. Monday. This comes just one week after neighboring Yucaipa banned medical marijuana dispensaries. A temporary ban in Yucaipa had expired.
The Loma Linda City Council voted on Sept. 8 to extend a moratorium on dispensaries until next summer and earlier this year, Beaumont banned dispensaries and established a moratorium on medical marijuana collectives and cooperatives.
In Calimesa, the staff report states that the non-profit South Coast Patients Collective Association wants to locate a dispensary in the Riverside County city. The organization made presentations at the Aug. 19 Planning Commission meeting and the Sept. 8 City Council meeting.
"Since then, Staff has received a few inquiries from other interested parties waiting to see what action the City will be taking," the report says.
The Calimesa zoning code does not address medical marijuana dispensaries and as a result are prohibited at this time, according to the report.
Staff advises the council it can take no action, establish a 45-day moratorium on dispensaries that can be extended for two years or amend the municipal code to allow for dispensaries.
The council will meet at the Norton Younglove Multipurpose Senior Center, 908 Park Ave.
