Meet The Mad Scientists Of Cannabis Oil

Genius Extraction Technologies and its massive installation of distilling tubes towered over the Cannabis World Congress expo floor. In the video above, co-founder Robert Gaither walks us through how the cannabis oil extraction process works, from its negative pressure and temperature system to cooling and filtration, evaporation, and distillation on an enterprise manufacturing scale.

Cannabis oil is one of the most versatile THC products, and Gaither explained how at different THC concentration levels, the oil (which he showed off to us in small sample sizes) can be used in absolute extracts, marijuana tinctures, edibles, vaporizer liquid, or even ultra-strong substances like "hempcrete." We saw plenty of flashy cannabis grow, production, and manufacturing tech walking around MWC, but only one booth sported a setup worthy of Dr. Frankenstein or Back to the Future's Doc Brown (who totally had to be blazing it on the reg offscreen, 1.21 gigawatts-style). The eye-catching array of tubes, beakers, and distillers drew some of the biggest crowds of any booth, and when we stopped to find out the story behind the mad weed scientists, we weren't disappointed.

First off, in a great wide world of cannabis oil and concentrate companies, it's a mom-and-pop operation. Founded by Brenna and Robert Gaither (the former a biochemist and the latter a salesman), Genius Extraction Technologies creates cutting-edge extraction systems to create highly potent oils of all kinds. The Lake Arrowhead, California company's roots are in chilled ethanol extraction, but Genius is continually experimenting, and has since invented new extraction methods for essential oils and, of course, THC and cannabidiol (CBD) oils.

The start-up currently offers four different types of extraction systems - a 20-liter rotary evaporator, a 50-liter rotary evaporator, a nitrogen generator, and what's called a short path distillation system. The company also sells vacuum ovens and a product called a Cryogenic Chiller, and each system is custom-built for clients depending on the use case, be it a small to midsize business (SMB)-sized dispensary or manufacturer distilling its own cannabis oil for infusion and sale, or a large-scale cannabis processing factory. The result: gallons upon gallons of oil production per day.

If Walter White got tired of the meth game and decided to open High-senberg's Dank Potions (FYI: There is a Breaking Bad-inspired Walter White OG strain), he could fill his entire lab with Genuis Extraction Technologies systems.
