More than five tonnes of cannabis has been seized at a port on England's east coast and arrests made across London. The haul, with an estimated street value of UKP12m, was uncovered by customs officers and the Met Police, and is said to be the force's biggest seizure. It was discovered hidden inside cargo of furniture and artefacts imported from Mexico on Thursday morning. Six men and two women were arrested in London and another man was later held in Essex as part of the operation. Police said the raids were part of an operation into gangs suspected of supplying drugs in London and had been planned for months.
Assistant Commissioner Tarique Ghaffur said: "Undoubtedly this large seizure of cannabis was destined for London and had the potential to create serious harm to our communities." Police said they have been working closely withHM Revenue and Customs to try to disrupt the flow of drugs in the UK. Det Sup Jim Dickie, from the Projects Team which led the operation, added: "This co-operation has led to the largest single seizure of cannabis in London ever, and will have a major impact on the market in the capital." Six men aged between 26 and 52 and two women aged 31 and 42 were arrested at addresses across London early on Thursday. Another man, aged 43, was later arrested in Essex as part of the operation.
