Adrian Twp. – The Adrian Township Board didn't make any decisions on medical marijuana facilities Monday, but it does appear to be leaning against them.

Township Supervisor Jim Koehn introduced the idea at Monday's board meeting. He asked the board to take a stand on the issue, either for or against allowing medical marijuana facilities into the township, in light of the new legislative regulations on how marijuana legally can be grown and distributed for medical purposes within the state of Michigan.

He said the new licensing system sets up regulations for facilities that would grow, process, sell, transport or test marijuana, but it's up to the township as to what it will or won't allow. This pertains to larger facilities, not the legal caregiver to patient setup.

Koehn said he's taken calls from parties interested in knowing the township's stance. He said at least once he's told a caller the township hadn't taken an official stance yet. However, he said, he called Adrian Township a "fairly conservative" community and added he would be surprised if the board was in favor of allowing these types of facilities.

Although the board gave no official stance Monday, board trustee Ben Ruesink said he didn't think Adrian Township should allow it.

Koehn said he recently attended the Michigan Association of Township Supervisors Midwinter Education Conference in Ypsilanti and one presentation was called, "Pot for Potholes?" He said the benefits and drawbacks were discussed, which included bringing in some new revenue for a municipality. In answering a question about how much revenue could it be from trustee Michael Herr, Koehn said the township could possibly tax a facility up to $5,000 annually, which he said didn't appear to be too much.

So, he asked, was it worth the township even looking into it, considering there could be many potential "hassles" as far as the allowing these types of facilities?

Township clerk Rob Hosken said he wasn't exactly up to date on all of the details of the legislation, so he wasn't ready to make a final decision. He said the board should take a look a closer look before taking an official stance next month.
