Workers at a Michigan dispensary have used card-check provisions to unionize this week.

The Joint Council 43 in Detroit announced today that 23 workers at three Blue Water Compassion Center locations in the state organized with Teamsters Local 1038 after a card-check campaign. Blue Water agreed to recognize the Teamsters Union as the workers' bargaining representative after receiving 22 signed cards, the union said in a statement.

"We are confident that our union will be able to negotiate a strong contract on behalf of the workers at Blue Water Compassion Center," said Greg Nowak, President of Local 1038, in the statement. "We have listened to what their concerns are and look forward to working with them."

Blue Water Compassion Center workers offer customer support to medical marijuana patients and primary caregivers.

"I am so excited to have the Teamsters representing us in the workplace," said employee Mark Sochacki in the statement. "I look forward to having a negotiated contract that provides job security and workplace protections."

Founded in 1903, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters represents 1.4 million workers in the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico. According to educational outreach foundation, American Rights at Work, "under current law, employers can recognize a union if a majority of employees demonstrates that they wish to be represented by a union -- usually by signing forms designating the union as their collective bargaining representative."

Last year, several marijuana businesses in Oakland, Calif., became among the nation's first to unionize.
