Boston - More than half of American adults favor legalizing marijuana, according to data published earlier this month by Pew Research. Half of the states in the nation already have some kind of legalized pot and residents of nine states will be voting on measures to establish or expand legalized marijuana use on Nov. 8.

Across those nine states, 82 million residents would be affected by the results of the votes in November, according to Ballotpedia.

In Massachusetts, Question 4 would decriminalize the use, possession, distribution and cultivation of marijuana in limited amounts by adults. It also creates a statewide system for regulating and taxing a legalized pot industry.

Along with Massachusetts, Arizona, California, Maine and Nevada will be voting in retail marijuana referendums. Arkansas, Florida, Montana and North Dakota are voting on medical marijuana issues.

The results of those votes could be hinge on the turnout of young voters. Pew Research found that millennials between the age of 18 and 35 are significant more likely to support legalization than other generations.

Pew found that more than half of Generation X and Baby Boomers members also favored legalization.

However the political divide between Republicans and Democrats could be significant. With Democrats favoring legalization two-to-one, but more than half of Republicans opposed, turnout for the contentious presidential race could have a significant impact on these measures.
