Legalize It!

Back when I used visit Twin Cities High Schools to discuss criminal law, I'd offer:

"In Minnesota, marijuana is either a felony or not a crime (under about 1.5 ounces) to possess, unless it's in a car. If in a car, a "small amount" is a non-felony crime, formerly called "marijuana in a motor vehicle."

Kids, it's a bad idea to have marijuana in a car at all, since the vast majoirty of all police searches are of cars. But if you do, at least keep it in the trunk, out of sight; and make sure there is no "odor" in the car.

And while were on the topic, never transport your legal firearms in a car at the same time the car contains any marijuana. Don't ever allow your guns to be in the same residence as marijuana either, if it can possibly be avoided.

Be aware of the legal excuses police can use to search you, your car, or your home. Avoid giving them any of those.

Be prepared as best can be, for the eventuality that they do search. Possession of a "small amount" in Minnesota is not a crime, only a petty misdemeanor. However, in recent years the government has changed the laws to define "sale" to include "manufacture;" and to define "manufacture" to include "cultivation." This tortured logic leads to the criminal charge of Controlled Substance crime - Sale" where police only claim the accused was in possession of a groing plant!

Remember jury nullification if you ever get jury duty!
